RBS WorldPay rolls out contactless payments on Liverpool bus network

RBS WorldPay has introduced contactless payments for transit passengers on a number of buses in the Liverpool Stagecoach network.

Matt Rowsell, head of business development at RBS WorldPay, says that contactless payments are one of the emerging technology projects at the bank division. The focus now is getting a contactless payments service running on further buses in Liverpool as well as on buses in London, he says.

Public transportation system is a popular launching pad for contactless payments. Last year the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) in Bolton launched a trial of an Oyster-style pre-paid contactless transit card that uses technology developed by e-money start-up sQuidcard.

The tap-and-go service is used for bus journeys operated by Arriva Manchester.

A friend of mine in Liverpool tells me this service is already known as "ride and hide".
