Barclaycard unveils contactless payments terminal for taxis

Barclaycard has teamed with London-based Computer Cab (ComCab) to unveil a contactless payments terminal that can be installed in taxis.

The terminal, which utilises Visa's 'wave and pay' contactless payments technology, is being showcased by Barclaycard Business at the Business Travel Show, which is currently running in Earls Court.

To illustrate how it will work, the device has been fitted to ComCab's new 'concept' taxi. Passsengers can pay for low-value fares by tapping their payment card against the device, which is located in the back of the cab.

Barclaycard says the system offers customers a "secure, efficient and convenient payment method for low value taxi fares and reduce the need to handle cash".

Barclaycard recently signed a deal with TranSys, the company behind London's pre-paid Oyster travel smart card, to add the underground travel card to its Visa debit and credit cards.

In November, US eftpos vendor Verifone said it was rolling out MasterCard's PayPass contactless payments system across all taxis licensed by the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA).
