A Danish court has heard how thieves were able to use fake debit cards to steal over DKr2.5 million over the course of three days from ATMs in Copenhagen.
According to a report by Danish broadsheet Berlingske Tidende, three Romanian men have appeared in court in Copenhagen in connection with the fraud.
The court heard how the gang created the fake cards by installing a small skimming device in a credit card reader at a bookshop in Copenhagen, which recorded information from customers' cards. This data was then copied to 'pre-pay' cards which were used at ATMs to steal funds from bank accounts.
The gang used the fake debit cards 509 times over three days to withdraw cash from several ATMs in Copenhagen. In one instance, a suspect was able to withdraw money at the same ATM for nearly two hours, says the report.
Police confiscated 236 fake cards when they arrested the men in February.
