ATMIA hails 1.5 million ATM milestone

The number of ATMs in the world is set to pass the 1.5 million mark just before Christmas, according to ATM Industry Association (ATMIA).

ATMIA says the very first ATM was installed in London in 1967. It took 33 years to reach the one million mark, but it has only taken six years to reach the 1.5 million milestone.

Currently there are an estimated 1,498,487 ATMs around the world, with a new unit being installed approximately every 5-10 minutes, according to London-based consultancy, Retail Banking Research, which calculates that ATMs are increasing at a rate of 192.32 ATMs per day, equivalent to one unit every 7.49 minutes.
