DE Shaw signs with Sun for massive grid project

New York investment firm DE Shaw has purchased 1700 Sun Fire servers running the Solaris 10 operating system for a massive computational grid project.

The quant-based investment house will use x64-based AMD Opteron servers to run the complex financial analysis applications and molecular modeling and other life sciences simulations utilised by the firm's in-house research staff.

Peter Reiss, DE Shaw SVP says the group's success is built on running complex applications that require massive computing power.

"Sun's advancement with Solaris 10 and expertise in grid computing will help us achieve our computational goals and develop best-in-class quantitative analysis solutions while reducing our operational and financial risk," he says.
