As part of the investment, UBS is to consolidate its data centres worldwide into two centres in Zurich using a new, multi-million dollar optical campus network based on Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 Multiservice Platform. This consolidation is expected to enhance efficiency through business continuity, data mirroring and lower operational costs says the bank.

Nortel Networks optical Storage Networking Solutions are protocol transparent and transmit any storage protocol – including Escon, Ficon and Fibre Channel – at native rates. Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 can provide a dedicated link between data centres, creating a network that eliminates the need for storage protocol conversions, says the vendor. Solutions built on the platform are designed to be carrier grade, with no single point of failure and at least 99.999 percent availability – equivalent to just five minutes of downtime in a year.
