ANZ contactless m-payments trial disappoints

Following a pilot, Australia's ANZ has decided not to push ahead with a microSD-based iPhone case that turns the mobile handset into a contactless payments device.

The bank teamed with Visa earlier this year for a four week trial that saw fifty participants from their Sydney and Melbourne offices given the cases with a secure microSD memory card that hosted a pre-paid ANZ account.

However, ANZ has now told ZDNet Australia that although the trial participants backed contactless payments "the MicroSD technology did not meet all of our requirements".

The bank is therefore ditching the technology, developed by Texan start-up DeviceFidelity, and will look at other mobile contactless options.

In New Zealand, ANZ is currently trialling similar Blackberry-based micro-SD cards for contactless payments as well as NFC stickers.

"the MicroSD technology did not meet all of our requirements"

What requirements did the technology not meet? And why was the trial started with technology that did not meet the requirements?
