We are developing SoftPos (softpos.eu) since early 2019, and while we had our first trials in July, 2020 we are now registering transactions in 4 countries with few thousands registered merchants.

I can't agree that it's necessary to buy a phone for 500 USD/EUR+, as our merchants are using various Android-based devices, including those that cost c.a. 100 EUR. The solution works well, as the requirements for our app are quite low (Android 8.0+, Internet access and NFC).

From our experience I also disagree with the thesis, that SoftPos is a solution for infrequent users and micro-merchants only, as we have real-life examples of both merchants registering tens/hundreds transactions daily and bigger companies (taxi corps, courier/delivery companies, local train operators) using our solution. Those merchants operate from 10 to 140 terminals and are specifically happy that their employees don't need to carry any additional devices, as they use our app installed on their existing hardware.
