Mobipay adds 10,000 Spanish taxis to merchant base

Mobipay, a joint venture m-commerce company formed by Spain's mobile operators and banks, has struck an agreement with Taxitronic to enable mobile payments in 10,000 taxis across 20 Spanish cities.

The agrement with Taxitronic increases Mobipay's merhcant base to 54,000, including 40,000 International Internet merchants and 4000 online and offline Spanish outlets.

Mobipay subscribers give their mobile number to the taxi driver who punches it into his existing eftpos terminal along with the payment details. These are authorised by the customer using a PIN code and confirmation is returned to both taxi terminal and client handset.

Mobipay launched the first mobile solution for Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure Code payments in December 2002. The system has since been adopted by the three leading Spanish banks, including BBVA and Santander Central Hispano

Mobipay International was established in December 2000 with a capital of EUR30 million. The first franchisee Mobipay España is owned by all Spanish mobile telephone operators, the majority of Spanish banks and the main payment processing companies.
