Vilnius street fair to use bluetooth beacons and QR codes to test mobile payments

More than 250 merchants at the annual Vilnius City Fiesta will be offering discounts to customers who pay for their goods with mobile phones, in an event billed as the world's first 'smart street fair'.

Stallholders selling folk art, souvenirs, clothes, accessories and food products, will be equipped with technology by EU-licensed payments outfit Paysera.

Andrius Balkunas, the development manager of EVP International, which has developed the Paysera payment system, says: "We will show to everyone that mobile payments are user-friendly, dont require specific skills, or equipment."

Stallholders will be equipped with Bluetooth iBeacons which will transmit offers to the phones of consumers at the counter and flag up a one-touch payments option. Each merchant will additionally display QR codes for buyers to scan to initiate payments. Customers will also be able to generate their own unique QR codes that the seller can read in exchange for payments.

To take advantage of the special offers, the 300,000+ visitors to the three-day event will need to create a Paysera account, and add funds through the Internet or cash in advance, or link it with their payment card. The free application can be downloaded from Google Play, Apple Store and Windows Phone Store. Funds to the e-wallet can be added during the Vilnius City Fiesta at special terminals manned by Paysera consultants.

Paysera is using proven way of promoting it's mobile pay. Olympics events have seen VISA and MasterCard providing such merchant acquiring and special cards ( smart card, mag cards or mobile top ups).
