Barclays launches app for customers to trial new mobile features

Barclays is inviting customers and developers to help shape its mobile banking services through the launch of an app providing early access to new features.

Some mobile banking users will soon spot an invitation offering them the chance to download Barclays Launchpad from an official app store.

Launchpad will have all the usual Barclays services but will also house some different features that users will be encouraged to give feedback on via the app or a dedicated social media page.

The bank is also asking developers and startups with "great digital ideas" to get touch for the chance to see their plans trialled by customers.

To coincide with the unveiling, Barclays initiated a two-day hackathon at the Unbound conference in London earlier this week, providing developers with access to stubbed banking APIs as well as a prototype Launchpad mobile app. Up for grabs for the winning team is an interview for entry into the Barclays Accelerator programme.

Ruchir Rodrigues, head of digital banking at Barclays, says: “Seeing first hand the power that collaboration can have for start-ups, we recognise that we have a role to play in partnering  with them to boost innovation and growth. We also think more needs to be done to bring customers into the heart of product and service development so that we can give them more of what they want and need.”
