Andreesen Horowitz hires fintech 'veteran' Alex Rampall as general partner

Venture capital firm Andreesen Horowitz is sharpening its focus on fintech with the appointment of serial entrepreneur and TrialPay founder Alex Rampall as a general partner.

Best known as the CEO and co-founder of e-commerce payments outfit TrialPay, Rampall has also tasted success with five other startups and has mentored and personally invested in dozens of disruptive young companies.

TrialPay, which counted clients such as Facebook, Zynga, and Gap, was acquired in 2015 by Visa. An offline affiliate networking spin off Yub was also sold to Coupons.com in 2013.

Prior to TrialPay, Rampall co-founded FraudEliminator, the first consumer anti-phishing company, which was ultimately acquired by McAfee in 2006.

He is also a cofounder of three other companies — TXN, a survey and transactional data company; Point, a real estate marketplace; and online consumer credit outfit Affirm, with former PayPal co-founder Max Levchin, which recently raised $275 million from a crop of top investors including Andreesen Horowitz.

"Alex’s knowledge and experience of tech startups is comprehensive and encyclopedic," says Marc Andreesen. "His interests and areas of expertise include software, security, crypto, payments, e-commerce, advertising, marketplaces, fintech, and more. His first day will be October 1, and we look forward to working together to help build the next generation of great technology companies."
