Japanese gamers can now buy the latest titles on Nintendo's eShop by tapping their contactless payment cards against their Wii U controllers.

The games giant is taking advantage of its console's built-in NFC capabilities to let customers make payments with various contactless cards, including Suica, Pasmo Kitaca, Toica, Manaca, Icoca.

A deal with the East Japan Railway Company, means that users of its 'Suica' smartcard - which is widely used in Tokyo and surrounding areas - will also be able to take advantage of a loyalty scheme, getting one Suica point for every 200 yen they spend at the eShop.

The eShop, already allows users to add money to their account balance through a credit card or prepaid card before purchasing and downloading games, applications and videos to their console. The outfit has seen its digital sales flourish, rising from two billion yen to over 16 billion yen in six years.

There is no news yet on whether NFC payments will be introduced outside of Japan.
