Northern Irish ATM digger-jackers hoist 18th machine

Independent retailers in Northern Ireland have called for the creation of an ATM crime task force after a gang used a mechanical digger with a telescopic arm to rip out a cash machine from a petrol station in County Antrim - the 18th such incident of its kind in recent months.

Glyn Roberts of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association says serious questions need to be asked as to why the police have failed to bust the gang behind this latest spate of attacks.

"It seems that the criminal gangs behind these robberies can strike at will in any of our town and villages in Northern Ireland," he says.

Local police say they are following "definite lines of inquiry" in pursuit of the raiders.

ATM network operator Link has offered a £25,000 reward to anybody with information that helps to nail the crooks.
