Currently Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), he is a former senior executive of IBM.

Mr. Etherington is a professional company director serving on the boards of a number of publicly traded, private and voluntary sector institutions since retiring from a long and successful international business career. He retired from IBM in September 2001 as Senior Vice President and Group Executive, Sales and Distribution. He was appointed to this position in 1998 where he was responsible for global sales and operations in over 160 countries. Mr. Etherington spent over 37 years with IBM and was a member of IBM's Operations Committee and Worldwide Management Council. He was a key player on Chairman and CEO Lou Gerstner's team in the turnaround of IBM.

Mr. Etherington holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and a Doctor of Laws (Hon.) from the University of Western Ontario.
