Ahead of the peak gifting season, Australian-born digital gift card company Prezzee, which recently surpassed the A$1bn valuation mark, has established itself in the UK market with the aim of disrupting the £7bn UK gift economy before expanding into Europe.

Founded in 2014, Prezzee is the market leading digital gift card in Australia and will issue over 20 million gift cards this year. The pandemic supercharged growth and headline sales increased 222% on the previous year. Growth was fuelled by expansion into the US market, where lucrative ‘white label’ deals with Macy’s and Uber Eats drove revenues by 400%. It is estimated that by 2023, the market share will be 5%.

Prezzee's UK rollout has followed a similar trajectory, adding retailers such as ASOS, John Lewis and Deliveroo to an ever growing list of over 750 partners globally and 120 in the UK. With gift cards overtaking physical presents as the UK’s lockdown gift of choice, Prezzee wants to further support retailers in the upcoming festive period. With an average additional 35% spent over the value of gift cards, UK retailers can not only tap into a £9.25bn opportunity but with issues with freight and logistics, gift cards offer the all important operational and cash flow support.

Prezzee has invested in making gifting easy and ensures a real connection between a sender and a receiver. Prezzee Business enables simple bulk sends, instant delivery with the option to co-brand with a business’ corporate logo and a personalised video, thanking them for their hard work or a festive message. For consumers every day gift giving is made simple and personal for the right gift, every time. Send a digital gift card from brands to friends and family around the world. You can schedule delivery, personalise it with a video or greeting card message and deliver it in seconds.

Prezzee’s approach also decreases the environmental impact of gifting. Traditional gift cards are made from plastic, and with over a million being manufactured in the UK in 2019, a huge majority of them end up in landfill. The creation of plastic gift cards also releases CO2 into the atmosphere. Prezzee’s gift cards eliminate the need for plastic, as every card is digital. Since the brand’s inception in 2014, over 105,000kg of CO2 has been saved by not making plastic cards.

Brand and retail partners come from a wide range of sectors, appealing to audiences from millennials to baby boomers. The technology driven by Prezzee, allows 360 degree integration across it’s platform which gives partners a better understanding of who buys what and when.

James Malia, Prezzee UK MD, said: “Over 108 million gift cards were bought in the UK in 2019, totalling £5 billion and the market is predicted to increase by 25% to £8.8 billion by 2025, Prezzee hopes to capitalise on this booming market and we’re so excited to be in the UK in the run-up to Christmas. This is an incredibly important time for the gift card industry, with people buying presents for loved ones as well as corporations looking to reward staff after a tough year. We’ve seen warnings about present shortages and a disrupted supply chain. Prezzee offers a solution for consumers and business gift givers allowing them to choose something that they truly want but also support UK retail at a crunch time.

“By using the power of technology, Prezzee is revolutionising the gifting economy. We are challenging the notion of gifting by creating moments in a post- pandemic world, making gift cards more personal whilst offering greater choice.”

Tony Karp, CEO and Managing Director, Prezzee, said: “What began as a small Aussie startup is now in full scale-up mode. By teaming up as a Mastercard Digital Rewards Partner, Prezzee will be able to seamlessly deliver its range into the Mastercard rewards and incentives programme enabling Prezzee to tap into hundreds of millions of consumers via our new partner’s business line.”

Prezzee now has offices in Australia, New Zealand, the US and the UK. Prezzee is 85 per cent owned by Precision Group, a private property investment and management company led by Australian billionaire Shaun Bonétt, with the remainder held by Prezzee’s co-founders and directors.
