Polish mobile payment scheme Blik goes contactless

Polski Standard Płatności, the operator of the mobile payment scheme BLIK and Mastercard, start strategic cooperation.

This is the implementation of the announcement from December 2018. Thanks to the partnership BLIK users will pay contactless.

The strategic cooperation between Polski Standard Płatności and Mastercard is a breakthrough moment in the further development of the BLIK mobile payment scheme. The collaboration will enable users to pay BLIK contactless with their smartphones, both in Poland and abroad. This will greatly increase the comfort of using BLIK when paying at points of sale (POS). Today, all POS terminals in Poland are equipped with contactless technology. In addition, by partnering with Mastercard, BLIK transactions will be accepted worldwide, in all POS terminals where Mastercard contactless payments are accepted. Hence, BLIK will become a universal global payment method.

Now we are starting a new stage of our history, which will bring a completely new quality of BLIK user experience - says Dariusz Mazurkiewicz, president of Polski Standard Płatności, the operator of BLIK. - Cooperation with Mastercard will allow us to significantly accelerate further development and benefit all customers of banks who are willing to pay with BLIK. The BLIK mobile payment scheme was created through the agreement and cooperation of the largest banks in Poland. Now, thanks to cooperation with a strong, global partner begins a new stage of development - adds Mazurkiewicz.

BLIK’s contactless functionality will become available through the service’s integration with Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES). As a result, POS mobile payments will be initiated and authenticated directly in the mobile banking app, which offers BLIK. MDES, Mastercard’s tokenization technology designed for digital era, enables generating tokens for cashless payment transactions, which allows to combine utmost security with the high level of convenience, bringing mobile contactless payments to the next level. BLIK is available in most Polish banks, so 90% of customers using banking services will be able to take advantage of the new feature. The first contactless BLIK payment will occur within the next two quarters.

Mastercard is the partner of choice for 60 FinTechs and digital banks across Europe, cooperating with them to bring out the best in innovation and to deliver safe and convenient digital payment solutions. Mastercard supports FinTechs in a number of ways, from programs like Start Path Global or Accelerate, to cooperation platforms such as The Heart and its The Heart Ventures, a “startup factory”, to joint development of particular solutions, to direct investments.

Certain details of the terms of the agreement between PSP and Mastercard will be disclosed upon fulfilment of all formal conditions.
