ATM fraud rose by 85 per cent and was announced as the fastest growing type of fraud in 2004, according to the Association of Payment Clearing Services (Apacs).

Diebold is constantly carrying out research to enable it to develop the next generation of machines with enhanced integrated ATM security measures, such as security lighting and consumer awareness mirrors, to keep its technology one step ahead of criminal activity.

By visiting the portal banks and building societies can access easy-to-understand information that applies to any ATM, whether inside or outside the bank or off-site at a retail location, and that they can share with their customers.

The portal summarises Diebold’s extensive research into global ATM security issues to provide simple advice including ATM safety tips (see below), how to report fraud and an explanation of common scams such as skimming, fake PIN overlays, accessing cash and phishing.

Top tips for ATM safety tips include: pay close attention at the ATM and your surroundings, never use an ATM at the corner of the building because corners create a blind spot, do not wear expensive jewellery at the ATM, never count cash at the machine and if an assailant demands your money, comply.
