Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that Sovereign Bank, one of the largest financial institutions in the United States, installed Lucent's network management software to support its expansive network of approximately 535 community-banking offices, nearly 1,000 ATMs, and about 8,300 team members throughout the northeast. Lucent's software will enable Sovereign Bank to realize sizeable cost reductions from savings in network equipment, technical staffing and improved network availability over the next five years.

Lucent's VitalSuite(R) Performance Management Software allows Sovereign Bank to monitor, analyze, predict and manage network-wide performance, from a single centralized location to maintain the highest service quality for the bank's network. Sovereign Bank selected and implemented Lucent's software to gain centralized visibility and control of their network after the addition of branch offices throughout New England. The software provides Sovereign Bank with an annual return on investment of 524 percent and a payback period of two months.

"Lucent's network management solutions allow us to make better use of our existing equipment," said Todd Dierksheide, Sovereign Bank senior network engineer. "We are now able to instantly identify trouble spots to ensure our customers will have 24-hour access to their account information and ATMs whenever and wherever they need it."

The bank is using Lucent's VitalSuite(R) Performance Management software system, to manage network and application performance for their extensive multi-vendor network. VitalSuite(R) software has helped Sovereign Bank by increasing network availability, effectively managing network capacity, and proactively monitoring service level agreements from their suppliers. The software helps Sovereign Bank recognize error thresholds more quickly and has the capability for setting alarms which alert network technicians when potential network problems are identified.

Sovereign Bank has also purchased VitalQIP(TM) for Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and Internet Protocol (IP) address management. VitalQIP(TM) DNS/DHCP IP Management software helps to configure, automate, integrate and administer IP services across the entire network and improves reconfiguration time by more than 60 percent, which significantly reduces the time spent manually managing an IP infrastructure

"Our Vital software allows Sovereign Bank to manage a complex network made up of thousands of servers with hundreds of access points," said Deepak Kanwar, VP of Product Management, Lucent Network Operations Software group. "Lucent's network management software allows Sovereign to focus its attention on its customers while our software worries about identifying and fixing network problems before they affect bank customers."
