Mastercard announced today plans to integrate Masterpass into Gulf Oil’s new mobile payment application, Gulf Pay.

The new offering, powered by P97’s PetroZone® mobile commerce platform, will enable Gulf customers to find the nearest Gulf gas station and utilize mobile payment technology to complete fast, simple, and secure payments at the pump and in stores.

Masterpass will be embedded in the Gulf Pay wallet as an additional secure payment method and will store all payment information, including card details, shipping information, and payment preferences in one convenient location. Masterpass leverages the most advanced methods of payment security available today, including tokenization, which ensures information is protected.

With the integration of Masterpass in the Gulf Pay wallet, Gulf and Masterpass customers will have a convenient, secure, and seamless shopping experience by allowing payment authorization directly from the comfort of their vehicle. Gulf plans to launch a pilot of the program at Gulf retail fuel locations throughout New England and New York markets in spring of 2017.

“Smartphones have become an integral part of our lives and the launch of the Gulf Pay app represents the next generation of payment options at our branded stations,” said Nikki Fales, Marketing Manager at Gulf Oil. “By working together with Mastercard and P97, we will be able to deliver better solutions for our customers and merchants.”

U.S. gasoline consumption has increased steadily for the past four years, with consumers pumping more than 135 billion gallons of gasoline in 2016 alone, per Mastercard SpendingPulse. As trips to the pump continue to increase, Gulf has identified an innovative way to differentiate its services and build loyalty among customers.

“We know that consumers want to fuel up quickly and be on their way, so we’ve partnered with P97 and Gulf to deliver a frictionless payment experience to get people back on the road as fast as possible,” said Linda Kirkpatrick, executive vice president, Merchants & Acceptance, Mastercard. “The fuel category is a great example of where Masterpass can deliver the speed a consumer wants with the security they’ve come to expect from Mastercard.”

With Masterpass, users can make purchases in merchant apps or online by simply clicking the Masterpass button and authenticating to complete a transaction. In-store, users simply tap to pay at contactless-enabled merchants and get on their way. “P97 is proud to bring together two partners, Mastercard and Gulf, as a demonstration of how mobile technology can join business objectives in retail fueling,” said P97 CEO, Donald Frieden. “The powerful PetroZone platform is strengthened by Gulf Oil’s commitment to industry-leading technology, and the proliferation of the robust ecosystem that Masterpass provides.”
