Braintree to support Apple Pay

It's been a hot week in mobile payments! On Monday, we announced general availability of One Touch™ mobile payments with PayPal, a continuation of our Venmo Touch product that we launched in 2013, and upcoming support for bitcoin via a new partnership with Coinbase.

Yesterday, as part of a series of much anticipated announcements, Apple introduced Apple Pay, a new mobile purchasing experience for iOS 8 on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the US. We know you have questions, so we thought we'd share more info on Braintree and Apple Pay.

Apple Pay consists of two key elements: support for merchants and payment processors to process Apple Pay transactions via tokenization, and a consumer wallet experience for native iOS apps. First, let's cover the payment processing. Tokenization is a well-known approach in the payment space where information such as credit card numbers are hidden by tokens that protect sensitive information. We have many years of experience processing such transactions with the wide array of processing partners we support, which includes most of the major platforms Apple suggests. As a result, we are fully capable of processing Apple Pay transactions should you choose to accept Apple Pay in your app. This means that merchants who currently use Braintree for their payment processing can rest assured that Apple Pay will work with Braintree.

Apple's consumer wallet experience is powered by APIs that will be available in iOS 8. Merchants have a challenge to support the rapidly evolving number of wallets available on different platforms. This is what Braintree's v.zero SDK was designed for - letting you accept all credit and debit cards, as well as other payment methods and wallets including, PayPal, and soon, bitcoin via Coinbase and Apple Pay. You get all of this with a single integration, and it's the same server-side code no matter where your users are -- iOS, Android, or Web. We'll have more to share soon on the details of v.zero and Apple Pay.

Apple Pay is exciting for mobile commerce. Braintree is here to help you support Apple Pay in addition to the other global payment experiences you need for your business to thrive on iOS, Android, and the web.
