Martin Currie, a specialist investment management business headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, has implemented SunGard's APT, a leading risk management, portfolio construction and optimization solution for buy-side institutions.

According to Martin Currie, it manages £11.3 billion (US$17.6 billion as at 31 December 2010) in active equity portfolios for a global client base of financial institutions, charities, foundations, endowments, pension funds, family offices, government agencies and investment funds. SunGard's APT will help Martin Currie measure, manage and report market risk, and provide the portfolio insight needed to help fund managers build better portfolios and integrate risk factors into investment decisions.

Martin Currie identified the need to replace its current vendor-provided system with a new risk system that would be flexible and customizable, matching Martin Currie's boutique investment style. The firm selected SunGard's APT because it can support its growth as it expands funds into different regions and countries. APT further provides both a range of risk factor models and the ability to build bespoke geographical models.

At Martin Currie, the risk management team works closely with the portfolio managers. The daily, weekly and monthly reporting requirements across all funds will be automated through APT so that the risk management team can focus on improving returns by offering advice on portfolio construction before trading decisions are made.

Paul Hughes, head of risk at Martin Currie, said, "Martin Currie views itself as a 'big boutique', offering the solidity, professionalism of execution and robustness of process of a large company, combined with the distinctiveness, client focus and personal ownership of a small company. SunGard's APT helped us reflect this ethos in our risk management by delivering a highly customized portfolio risk solution that is easily integrated into our own unique framework."

Tim Green, head of SunGard's alternative investments business, said, "An increasing number of investment managers contact us to find out how they can take an integrated approach to risk management. By provoviding pre-trade decision support and risk analysis in addition to risk reporting, APT helps investment management businesses integrate risk into investment decisions to help improve returns."
