Fairwinds Credit Union of Orlando, Fla., has renewed its membership in the Star network and named Star its preferred provider of PIN-secured debit point-of-sale (POS) and ATM access.

The credit union has also selected First Data to provide credit, debit and ATM processing; ATM terminal driving; risk and fraud services; and loyalty program management.

Fairwinds is a Central Florida credit union with more than $1.5 billion in assets. It issues 176,000 debit cards and operates 55 ATMs. STAR is one of the nation's leading electronic funds transfer (EFT) networks, with more than 2 million retail and ATM locations, and a First Data company. First Data is a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing.

"This decision reflects our confidence in STAR's strategy, industry-leading payment technologies and new product innovation, as well as their ability to help drive economic efficiency through integration with First Data's processing services," said Charlie Lai, executive vice president and chief information officer for Fairwinds Credit Union. "Through revenue generated by our choice to route transactions through STAR vs. other domestic networks, we will be able to fuel feature-rich card services that exceed our members' needs."

"With our singular focus on driving PIN debit forward, STAR is uniquely positioned to deliver the most relevant products and services for Fairwinds' members," said Kevin Barry, general manager for the STAR Network. "In addition, the credit union now benefits even further from the increased efficiency and effectiveness across its debit and ATM programs that result from the integration of STAR's network solutions with First Data's services."

Fairwinds Credit Union has been a STAR member since 1990. Terms of the agreement remain confidential.
