Archipelago deploys StreamBase data processing engine
StreamBase Systems, Inc., the source for software to process, analyze, and act on real-time data within milliseconds of its arrival, today announced that Archipelago Holdings Inc., the operator of the Archipelago Exchange (ArcaEx), the first totally open all-electronic stock exchange in the United States, plans to implement the new StreamBase Stream Processing Engine to provide enhanced trade quality of service monitoring in real-time on ArcaEx.

As the volume and speed associated with the processing of trading data continues to increase, it is important that a company's system-level software be able to ensure timely processing and analysis. StreamBase is designed to permit companies like Archipelago to process all performance-related information in real-time and automatically trigger alerts for operational managers if pre-defined thresholds are reached.
"We focus on two things - speed and agility," said Steve Rubinow, Archipelago's chief technology officer. "The combination of high performance and the ability to create and modify applications quickly were key factors in selecting StreamBase. When it comes to optimising trading and response time, speed counts. StreamBase will help us meet our performance standards today and in the future, while still giving us the flexibility to modify the application quickly as business needs change."
"StreamBase is designed to process real-time information at blindingly fast speeds, and allow for real-time applications to be built and deployed quickly and easily," said Barry Morris, chief executive officer at StreamBase Systems. "Archipelago is an excellent example of a company dealing with an incredible flow of information in a rapidly changing marketplace. We believe the speed, flexibility, and rapid time-to-market delivered by StreamBase will enable Archipelago to continue to set new standards for performance."
StreamBase is able to meet the needs of the real-time world by addressing some fundamentally new challenges. The first is the capability to process, query, analyse and act on the tremendous - and growing - volume of streaming data within milliseconds of its arrival. The fluidity of real-time data - and the rapidly changing requirements for its use - also requires the ability to create or modify applications in hours or days, rather than months or multiple person-years. In addition, systems that process streaming data must integrate with the existing enterprise infrastructure provide high availability operation and scale to meet exponentially increasing data volume.
StreamBase is able to meet the emerging market requirements for real-time processing by bringing together four critical elements:
- The StreamBase Stream Processing Engine: the first real-time processing architecture, this new infrastructure platform features a high performance, highly configurable enterprise-class server able to solve the most demanding real-time processing and analytical problems
- StreamSQL: an extension to standard SQL created specifically for real-time data
- StreamBase Studio(TM): an integrated development environment (IDE) is a graphical environment that allows production quality enterprise-class applications to be designed, tested and deployed in only hours or days
- Enterprise Class Infrastructure: which provides the reliability, scalability and availability demanded by enterprise applications
