Merrill Corporation, a leading global provider of technology-enabled services for the financial, real estate, legal and other corporate markets, today announced a joint marketing agreement with Mobular Technologies, Inc. the financial industry's leading provider of shareholder communications technologies and services.

They will market an innovative new solution that addresses the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC's) new summary prospectus requirements for the mutual fund industry.

"Mutual fund companies will gain significant value through Merrill's integrated solution," said Roy Gross, president of Merrill Corporation's Marketing and Communication Solutions business unit. "Through the joint marketing agreement, we can help mutual fund companies substantially reduce costs and, at the same time, eliminate the challenges and resource demands of creating, maintaining and managing prospectus communications. Additionally, our solution preserves all of the original document formatting and branding that is so important to our clients."

The summary prospectus rule, approved in January 2009, requires mutual funds to deliver a summary section in the statutory prospectus. Fund companies can either print and mail the statutory prospectus or they can print and mail only a summary prospectus document to their shareholders, as long as they post the statutory prospectus to the internet within 24 hours in a specific linked manner defined by the SEC. The rule provides mutual fund companies with significant cost-saving opportunities - estimated by the SEC at approximately $190 million annually - and provides shareholders with easily accessible information. However, the SEC's strict linking and same-day filing requirements may pose implementation challenges for mutual fund companies.

Merrill now provides mutual fund companies with an exclusive, end-to-end solution for summary prospectuses that they can implement immediately. The solution offers:

  • World-class document composition (typesetting)
  • EDGAR filing
  • Fully-automated document linking that meets and exceeds SEC summary prospectus requirements with Mobular's Summary PRO AR
  • Web site hosting and easy-to-navigate document libraries
  • On demand printing for summary prospectuses and related disclosure documents
  • Order fulfillment for shareholder requests of printed documents (summary prospectuses, statutory prospectuses, SAI, shareholder reports)
  • Toll-free call center support

"We are excited to begin our joint marketing relationship with Merrill", states Mobular CEO Allen Dillard. "Our companies have worked together for several years, and we share similar business philosophies. We believe the unique combination of our technologies and services will truly revolutionize the way the market thinks about solving electronic document delivery requirements in the future."
