Key to this is the introduction of a range of merchant-focused tools, aimed at helping them to engage in the payments system in the most efficient and beneficial manner possible. This includes the publication of MasterCard intra-European MIF rates (multilateral interchange fees), the launch of a dedicated merchant website and publication of a new merchant Rules Manual.

To spearhead this new initiative, Brian Moore has been appointed to head up merchant strategy for the MasterCard Europe region. In this new role, he has responsibility for MasterCard’s acceptance strategy and acquirer relations and together with his team, will be developing strategic retail partnerships across Europe. Brian was previously MasterCard Europe senior vice president and general manager for the UK.

"The acceptance community represents a critical part of the vibrant payments system," said Brian Moore. "And we are looking to creating a more informed and open dialogue between all the players. Our end game is to ensure that we move together towards a more successful, robust and growing cards business. At MasterCard, this means we’ll not only strengthen our interface with merchants by putting a number of initiatives in place, but provide dedicated resources in the organisation to continuously support and better manage our joint future together."
