UK students shun credit cards - Apacs

Two weeks after most students are back at University, Apacs releases some interesting facts about 16-24 year old payment habits.

APACS statistics reveal the payment profile of students (aged 16 and 24¹):

  • Nearly three quarters have a debit card (73 per cent), which is below the national average of 84 per cent, while only two in ten hold a credit card (22 per cent) compared to the national figure of 64 per cent
  • Of those who own a credit card, 59 per cent always repay the full balance on all of their cards - higher than the national average of 55 per cent
  • Men aged 16 to 24 withdraw an average of £2,821 cash a year through 86 cash machine visits, and women of the same age group withdraw £2,625 a year through 70 cash machine visits
  • Men aged 16 to 24 make an average of 63 payments in supermarkets over the year, spend £400 in restaurants, cafes and snack bars per year, spend £22 a year in shoe shops, £66 a year in electrical retailers and a total of £99 online shopping in three transactions
  • By comparison, women aged 16 to 24, make an average of 77 payments in supermarkets over the year, spend £218 in restaurants, cafes and snack bars per year, spend £83 a year in shoe shops, £90 a year in electrical retailers and a total of £209 online shopping in nine transactions
  • 40 per cent of men aged 16 to 24 use telephone or internet banking compared to 34 per cent of women, and a national average of 49 per cent across the country
