KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY) announced today that Stephen "Steve" E. Yates has been elected an executive vice president and chief information officer.

Yates will head Key Technology Services and report to Tom Stevens, Key's chief administrative officer. He will serve on the company's 13 member Management Committee.

"Steve has a distinguished, three-decade record of managing a wide variety of Information Technology (IT) organizations," noted Henry Meyer, Key's chairman and chief executive officer. "He's significantly improved the effectiveness and efficiency of every IT unit he's led. That Key continues to attract such talented individuals - not only at the most senior level, but throughout the company - sends an exceptionally positive message about our future success."

Yates most recently was president, Information Technology Company (ITCO), a unit of United States Automobile Association (USAA), a $71 billion financial services firm based in San Antonio, TX. In that capacity, he oversaw a for- profit IT business - with a portfolio of 200 products and services - that supported USAA's banking, investment management, life insurance, and property and casualty insurance businesses.

Prior to USAA, Yates ran for-profit IT departments at Rockwell Automation, a division of Rockwell International, in Milwaukee, and Houston-based Brown & Root, a global engineering and construction firm. At Rockwell he was responsible for worldwide IT and Logistics serving 86 countries. From 1977-
1989, he held management positions with divisions of ENSERCH Corporation, managing IT operations and telecommunications for several of its operating companies.

Yates holds M.S. and B.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering from the University of Alabama.
