LSE and Borsa Italiana electronic equity trading volumes soar

A total of 21.2 million electronic equity trades were carried out on the London Stock Exchange and Borsa Italiana during February 2008, an increase of 46 per cent on February last year.

The total value traded was £259.5 billion (€344.4 billion), up 16 per cent on February last year. The average daily number of electronic equity trades increased 39 per cent to 1.0 million, while the average daily value traded grew 10 per cent to £12.4 billion (€16.4 billion).

UKOrder Book

During February the total number of electronic equity trades on the UK order book was 14.5 million, an increase of 82 per cent year on year. The average daily number of trades was 691,357, up 73 per cent on February last year.

The total value traded during the month was £172.6 billion (€229.1 billion), an increase of 24 per cent on February last year. The average daily value traded grew 18 per cent year on year to £8.2billion (€10.9 billion).

Italian Order Book

The total number of trades in Italian equities during the month was flat at 5.9 million, and the total value traded was down 13 per cent on February 2007to€92.3 billion (£69.6 billion).

The average daily number of Italian equity trades was 281,733, and the average daily value traded was€4.4 billion (£3.3 billion).

International Order Books

778,972 electronic trades in international equities were carried out across the two exchanges' markets during February 2008, an increase of 27 per cent on February last year. The total value traded increased 29 cent compared with the previous year to £17.3 billion (€23.0 billion).

ETF and ETCs

The value traded in ETFs and ETCs across the two markets doubled compared with February 2007, up 103 per cent to£4.7 billion (€6.2 billion). The total number of trades also increased, up three per cent on last year to 148,290 trades.

Derivatives

7.5 million contracts were traded on EDX London and IDEM during February, an increase of 36 per cent on February 2007. The notional value traded was up 30 per cent year on year to £131.2 billion (€174.2 billion).

Separately, there were 220,577 trades in securitised derivatives during the month, amounting to a total value traded of £1.2 billion (€1.7 billion).
