International trade association Prepaid International Forum (PIF) today announced that it will establish a Transport Working Group.

The announcement reflects forum members' interest in exploring and developing the potential for prepaid cards in the UK, European and global transport markets.

Members of the new group will include representatives of financial institutions and transport companies such as the major bus and rail operators. The first meeting will take place in London on 1 April 2008.

As well as monitoring on-going developments in target markets, the group will provide support for PIF members by providing a platform for discussion and by developing White Papers and seminars on key areas of focus. The Working Group's remit will include all aspects of transport - public and private - and allied services, to include bus and rail ticketing, parking, road tolls and congestion charging.

The Working Group will be chaired by Alan Leibert, Director of ALCO Consulting. Mr Leibert explained: "A key initial task will be to gather in-depth information regarding the current market size and the potential for prepaid products and services in the area of transport. Armed with such information, members can make informed decisions as to whether, when and how to enter the market."

Speaking at the SMI Nordic Card conference in Stockholm, PIF Director Robert Courtneidge said: "The establishment of a fourth PIF Working Group to focus on this important market is indicative of the speed with which the forum has evolved since its inception in June 2007. Transport is a key area for prepaid transactions and our aim is to provide global thought leadership as a means of contributing to on-going development of the prepaid market."
