SunGard, a global leader in integrated software and processing solutions and the pioneer and leading provider of information availability services, today announced that it has become a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The WBCSD brings together leading international companies that share a commitment to the principles of sustainable development via economic growth, ecological growth and social progress. Members represent most major business sectors, come from all regions of the world and benefit from a global network of business councils and partner organizations.

Bjorn Stigson, president of the WBCSD, said, "We are very pleased that SunGard has decided to join the WBCSD. Although knowledge-based and services companies may have a smaller carbon footprint than industrial and manufacturing companies, the world and the communities they operate in are increasingly shaped by sustainable development issues. We hope that SunGard will join with its customers and partners to provide business leadership as a catalyst for change in the information technology sector."

Cristobal Conde, president and chief executive officer of SunGard, said, "We have much to learn from organizations like the WBCSD, but also we have much to contribute. Our employees identify strongly with global social, ethical and environmental issues such as climate change, particularly because accountability is one of our core values. Increasingly, sustainability issues are influencing our customers' buying preferences and our ability to compete for and retain global talent. Taking a leadership position in sustainable development will help improve our competitiveness. We have taken the first steps to making sustainability an integral part of how we work. We now need to move from awareness to action."
