More than £35 million will be invested in the new centre, which will be the company's tenth and largest facility, and the first stage of the development is expected to be ready in 2008 with the recruitment of 1100 software professionals. The entire development is set to be complete in three additional phases, over the next five years.

Joe Venkataraman, Managing Director of Mastek's UK operations said: "The UK insurance industry is significant for Mastek, and overall the region makes up a large proportion of our revenue stream. The new facility in Chennai will ensure that we continue to provide enhanced services to our UK customers and also demonstrates our commitment to the UK insurance market."

The company also said it is building a centre of excellence at the recently launched Chennai facility to acquire competencies in mainframe technology, which provides massive storage capacity, and improves data security and flexibility in the client/server design.

Sudhakar Ram, Chairman and CEO of Mastek, said: "The Chennai facility is central to Mastek's ongoing business plans and takes the company a step closer to becoming one of the leading suppliers of component-based software and applications development services."

He added: "Chennai has an enormous talent pool and we want to tap into this by offering an attractive proposition for professionals to work on complex projects, building competencies in mainframe technology. The additional capacity will enhance our ability to cater to our clients in the UK and globally, particularly in insurance, but also in the financial services and government sectors."
