Nationwide, which opened over 400,000 new current accounts during the year taking the total number of accounts held to nearly 2.3m, says that over 800,000 people visit its Web-site every month and over 1.3m members are registered to use the society's online service. Over 23% of current account holders are cited as regular users of Internet banking.

The figures, released in line with Nationwide's financial results for 2002, coincide with the publication of data from pollsters Mori indicating that one fifth of the UK population currently bank online.

The Mori study, conducted on behalf of RSA Security, found concerns over security to be the main barrier to further growth in online banking take-up, with an additional 20% of the population willing to bank online if security can be improved.
