Twelve convicted following Coventry cash machine cock-up - BBC

The BBC reports that twelve people have admitted stealing nearly £300,000 from Coventry Building Society cashpoint machines that allowed them to take out large sums of money.

The problem arose when the building society tried to upgrade security on its 54 cashpoints around the city, says the BBC, but instead the machines gave out as much as £800 every time a card was inserted.

Twelve people admitted stealing or conspiracy to steal from the cash machines, which have been secured since last August's thefts. Sentences ranged from 180 hours community service to 15 months in prison. One family of four, who took a total of £134,000, received jail sentences of between 12 and 15 months, states the report.
