The system will connect the bank's larger branches, corporate headquarters, customer service centres and disaster recovery centre to Korea Telecom's optical backbone.

The bank will lease Nortel's OPTera Metro 5200 and 3500 platforms and additional network infrastructure from Korea Telecom to link to an existing Nortel Passport 8600 routing switch.

Ho Kyung Kang, manager, operation and planning, Hana Bank, says: "This new network will allow us to serve our customers better and create a flexible, reliable and 'future-proof' platform for introduction of new, online banking services."

Nortel Networks adds that the solution will be supplied through its local distributor NetCom Systems.
