Masashige Shirataki, vice president of system development, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, says that following the merger of the Sumitomo and Sakura banks, the bank needed to consolidate its network and support its clients' daily ATM activity.

The Unisys ES7000 servers support a gateway for message switching and transaction processing between Sumitomo Mitsui's bank cash service centre and its mainframe systems. In addition to simplifying administrative procedures for the bank, the ES7000 servers also track and record the automated teller machine (ATM) activity of its clients, processing the demands of up to 6000 ATM transactions per minute, says the company.

The servers run Microsoft's Windows 2000 Datacenter Server operating system and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition database management system.

Sumitomo Mitsui has installed two ES7000 servers in its Tokyo centre and two in its Osaka centre. In each centre, one server provides backup for the other machine. The Tokyo and Osaka Centres, located 300 miles apart, provide disaster recovery backing for each other. The Tokyo Centre also uses an additional two ES7000s for test and development purposes.
