The new card enables operators to offer consumers m-commerce, m-banking, as well as information, entertainment and gaming services. It also stores valuable contact information, such as phone numbers, e-mail and Internet addresses.

The eSIM 3G has an Eeprom memory capacity of 64K bytes and supports GSM functionality. These features make it an ideal SIM card platform to migrate from 2G to new 3G services, says Setec. The card also offers an open application toolkit platform to develop new applications and services.

Due to be rolled out in the third quarter 2002, the card supports ETSI and ISO standards and enables user authentication to be based on PKI (public key infrastructure) technology. In addition, WIM security functionality is provided for WAP-based services.

Pekka Santanen, senior vice president at Setec, comments: "Third generation mobile networks will enable services such as mobile Internet access, multimedia, video conferencing and mobile commerce in different mobile devices. All these services rely on the third generation SIM card to provide the required security so that network operators, service providers and the users can be mutually identified and authenticated."
