Apple enables Express Mode for tap and go journeys across London

Apple is launching an Express Mode option for travellers on London's transit network, enabling commuters to tap and go without logging in.

Long a feature of Google Pay on Android phones, Express Mode users no longer need to authenticate their payment with Face ID or Touch ID but may simply touch their iPhone or Apple Watch on the yellow card reader to proceed with their journey.

There have been persistent grumblings from mobile phone users about the slowness of Apple Pay compared to Oyster, as well as the odd complaint about using Touch ID in the sweltering summer heat.

Express Mode also negates the niggling worry of battery failure during a journey, incurring the payment of a penalty for not being able to prove a ticket purchase. Available on Apple's premium iPhone XR or later, the facility enables user's to keep travelling up to five hours after the red Power Reserve icon appears.
