Old Mutual enlists AWS for cloud migration

African financial services giant Old Mutual is moving to the cloud, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred provider.

Old Mutual is migrating its digital customer platforms, core insurance applications, and product administration systems to the cloud. In total, over 1000 applications are moving to AWS, with Old Mutual data centres shut down by 2022.

The firm is also integrating AWS’s analytics and machine learning services into its business processes as it seeks to drive greater insights and build more personalised customer facing applications and experiences.

Old Mutual is building a data lake on AWS, called the Information Fabric, which will provide a single, consistent view of a customer’s information across the entire business. Meanwhile Amazon Lex, a service for building conversational interfaces into applications using voice and text, is being tapped by Old Mutual for a website chatbot that provides instant responses to customers via voice, email, web, or text - 24 hours a day.

“AWS provides us with the depth and breadth of services we need to innovate like a startup, with the security expected from Africa’s oldest and most trusted financial services company,” says Johnson Idesoh, CIO, Old Mutual. “With AWS, we can rapidly experiment at lower costs and push the successful experiments into production faster, allowing us to improve the experience for existing customers and attract new ones."
