ECB shuts down website hit by hackers

The European Central Bank has shut down its Banks’ Integrated Reporting Dictionary (Bird) website after it was hacked and injected with malware.

Crooks managed to inject malware onto the external server to "aid phishing activities" on users of the Bird site, which provides bankers with information on producing statistical and supervisory reports.

The bank says email addresses, names and position titles - but not passwords - of 481 Bird newsletter subscribers may have been compromised by the attack. Those affected are being contacted.

Bird is hosted by an external provider and is physically separate from other ECB systems, the bank stresses, adding that no internal systems or market-sensitive data were affected.
