FCA on the hunt for director of innovation

The Financial Conduct Authority is advertising for a new head of innovation to spearhead the watchdog's recently created Innovation Division.

The new unit has been set up to lead a more analytics-led regulatory approach to policy formulation with a focus on RegTech initiatives and supporting new and established businesses in the roll-out of innovative financial products and services.

"This role will have a large impact on the FCA and the achievement of its objectives through helping build approaches in innovation, FinTech, RegTech, advanced analytics and data," states the job ad. "This will help prepare the FCA to navigate through rapidly changing technologies and set us up as the regulator of the future."

Reporting directly to Christopher Woolard, the regulator's executive director of strategy and competition, the successful candidate will have a wide-range of responsibilities, including:

  • leading the FCA's Innovation policy function
  • overseeing technological developments in the financial services sector and bridging the gap between emerging fintech, innovative products, diverse firms, the FCA and its objectives
  • managing the FCA's Innovate and Sandbox programmes
  • leading the development of an FCA organisation-wide capability to support a more data and analytics-led regulatory approach by supporting and promoting the use of advanced analytics techniques and building an analytics community
  • facilitating and monitoring the adoption of new technology as an integral element of RegTech; liaising between the FCA and firms
  • driving an innovative approach to regulation within the FCA, working with and counselling the FCA's executive committee and board
  • leading and enabling the FCA Data Strategy by delivering the systems, services and structures required for producing the Sector Views and other analysis products
  • acting as a key spokesperson for active promotion of the FCA's engagement between regulation, technological innovation and the FCA's advanced analytical capability, both internally and with external stakeholders.

Why did the past head move on ? If its a new position why would the position not have been filled first giving the new head an opportunity to stucture the division ?
