Ex-Barclays man Ormerod joins BBVA to lead New Digital Business unit

Spanish banking giant BBVA has brought in Ian Ormerod to lead its New Digital Business (NDB) unit, where he will team up again with former Barclays colleague Derek White.

Ormerod left Barclays in 2016 after nearly four years at the British bank as MD, group design and digital. He has also had stints at Abbey National Bank and AXA.

Having worked with BBVA over the past few months as a consultant, he is now taking over the NBD unit from Teppo Paavola, who is leaving the company.

Established three years ago, the NDB unit is tasked with developing disruptive initiatives, collaborating with the fintech startup ecosystem and making digital acquisitions.

Ormerod's appointment is part of a reorganisation of BBVA's customer solutions area, which is led by Derek White, who joined in 2016 from Barclays, where he was chief design and digital officer.

The shakeup also sees Gonzalo Rodriguez lead a new global unit responsible for the development of the best solutions for retail customers. He will be replaced as head of digital transformation at BBVA Spain by Sofía Rodríguez-Sahagún, currently marketing director in that country.
