Portland puts virtual transit fare card in Android Pay

Google has teamed up with Portland's public transport operator TriMet to make the world's first virtual transit fare card available within Android Pay.

This month, a group of TriMet C-Tran and Portland Streetcar beta testers can load a virtual 'Hop' card into Android Pay, enabling them to tap their phones to pay for their fares and receive the benefits of a physical Hop card.

TriMet riders can already use debit and credit cards within Android Pay for adult fares, but the new integration means that they can also buy youth and other types of fares as well as set up reloads and earn day passes.

To link their Hop cards to Android Pay, the beta testers download the Hop Fastpass app from Google Play, purchase a virtual card and add a balance through a one-time transaction or auto top-up.

A full rollout of the integration is slated for early next year.
