BBVA travels deeper into the cloud

BBVA has inked a global agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS), pitching its digital transformation strategy deeper into the cloud.

The cloud technology agreement, which turns AWS into a priority partner for BBVA, is part of a series of alliances that the Spanish bank is aiming to forge with strategic partners. Earlier this year, BBVA announced its first such global alliance with Cisco to cover its global networking needs, following up with a deal with Red Hat on the introduction of an open source multi-cloud-based operating environment.

BBVA has already been working with Amazon on the movement of data intensive applications to the cloud, porting its analytics application for retailers Commerce 360 to AWS.

Ricardo Moreno, global head of BBVA Engineering says the shift is intended to help the bank handle an exponential growth in digital transaction, from 542 million per day currently, to over one billion in 2017.

“The digital transformation of our business means that our technology platforms must be prepared to face an exponential transactions growth and cloud computing technologies have much to contribute in this direction,” he says. “Working with AWS and having them accompany us on this journey not just with their products but also with their expertise, will accelerate our transformation.”

Concurrent with the new deal, BBVA will set up a ‘Cloud Community’ to "improve knowledge sharing and adherence to architectural and security policies and standards, ensuring regulatory compliance," Moreno adds.
