Eurobank Poland launches HCE-based mobile payments

Eurobank Poland is looking to capitalise on the nation's love affair with contactless payments by launching an Android-based mobile payments service.

The bank is working with Bell ID and First Data to roll out the HCE-based mobile wallet to its one million customers.

Poland is deemed the largest market in Europe for contactless payments, accounting for 40% of all Visa debit card payments and 55% of Mastercard transactions. More than 75% of all in-store Point of Sale (POS) terminals support contactless payment, with plans in place for all Polish POS terminals to deploy the technology by the end of 2017.

The Eurobank contract is the first for Bell ID and First Data Poland, which have allied to develop mobile payment services for the nation's banks.

“Our alliance with First Data makes life easy for banks,” comments David Orme, CEO of Bell ID. “The two platforms are fully integrated, enabling issuers to launch cloud-based mobile payments quickly and cost effectively. Mobile payments are at the heart of many banks’ strategies and it’s great to see the full-scale roll out of Eurobank’s mobile wallet, especially as contactless is booming in Poland."

Earlier this year, Visa Europe said that it had rounded up the support of nine Polish banks for the roll out of its cloud-based mobile payments specifications for NFC-enabled Android phones.
