Oliver Bussmann, the global CIO for UBS and the man credited with transforming the bank's IT, has left his role at the Swiss giant.
In addition to his work with UBS, Bussmann is also known as an early proponent of blockchain technology and has been varyingly referred to as a fintech-evangelist and social media superstar with tens of thousands of followers on Twitter and LinkedIn.
Bussmann's next steps are unknown, although his LinkedIn page does refer to his role as a mentor for tech accelerator Level39. His position at UBS will be filled by chief operating officer Axel Lehmann until a replacement is appointed.
Lehmann paid tribute to Bussmann's contribution to the bank in a staff memo, crediting him with driving the "modernisation of our technology infrastructure, simplified our application landscape and actively championed technology innovation as a key competitive advantage for UBS".
Formerly global CIO at German tech firm SAP, Bussmann joined UBS in 2013. His reputation as an advocate of new technology was enhanced when in October 2014 he predicted that blockchain technology would reinvent the financial industry.
