Italian motorists cash in on lorry accident

A lorry carrying around EUR2 million in coins has overturned on an Italian highway, shedding its load to the delight of passing motorists who stopped and helped themselves.

The security lorry carrying one and two euro coins from the Italian mint to local banks saw its doors forced open on impact, with the precious cargo spilling onto the road in Southern Italy.

According to press reports, passing drivers stopped and pocketed around EUR10,000 before police arrived on the scene and closed the road to recover the cash.

Police believe EUR50,000 may be ultimately unaccounted for.

A post-crash video on the BBC Website shows thousands of coins strewn amidst the wreckage on the central reservation.
