Under terms of the agreement, Colt will provide Berenberg with redundant fibre connections between the two organisations' data centres along with a back-up data centre in Hamburg.

The back-up data centre and real-time data mirroring provided by Colt willl enable the bank to switch over all critical business IT applications very quickly in the event of a problem and operate from an alternative location.

Gerd Simon, director, Berenberg Bank, says the system is designed to assure "absolute maximum availability" for all services.

"We cannot allow ourselves to endanger that trust from a technical security point of view," says Simon. "This is why we have put in place between two and four layers of security on the technology and data in both data centres."
