MasterCard is trialling a contactless card reader that allows payment instructions to be transmitted through a glass window.
The On Track Innovations reader is being used for cinema ticket and snack purchases at Loews Cineplex in Orlando as part of MasterCard's contactless PayPass trials. The OTI Smart Antenna allows the card readers to function smoothly through the glass so that the payment card never has to leave the customer's hand.
Also, Gilbarco Veeder-Root announced this week that it has retrofitted the nation's first gasoline dispensers to accept MasterCard PayPass contactless
payment cards in late February. Gilbarco Veeder-Root designed retrofit kits for The Advantage dispensers comprising an RF antenna, which sends a signal that provides power for the card's chip to transmit account information. The information is received by a contactless Panasonic reader unit that converts the data into conventional magnetic stripe format. The dispensers are able to process transactions using conventional payment cards as well as cards with the PayPass enhancement.
The PayPass trial will be gradually extended to encompass 40 merchant locations in Orlanda accepting contactless payments from 15,000 cardholders of Chase, Citibank and MNBA.
