BNP Paribas to pilot cards with dynamic CVV codes

02 October 2015  |  13536 views  |  3 OT mini-screen card

BNP Paribas has become the latest French bank to pilot Oberthur's OT Motion Code technology, replacing the three-figure CVV code on the rear of a card with a small screen display that automatically changes periodically.

The bank will issue 1000 of the cards, which have a screen on their back displaying a security code that is regularly refreshed, to selected customers for use in online payments.

Marc Espagnon, head of payment and cash management at BNP Paribas says: “The trial is fully in line with BNP Paribas’ desire to constantly improve our customer experience. By testing this solution with our customers in France, we believe that we will increase their confidence in online payments through increased security."

The first live trials of the product were conducted last year by Banque Populaire and Caisse d’Epargne. Oberthur has provided no details on the outcome or user experience issues uncovered during that initial pilot.

People have been talking about the possibility of a dynamic CVV for years.   It's a really neat solution which deserves to succeed.  I believe the technology has been developed by NagraID - the Display Card company - which i seem to remember was taken over by Oberthur not so long ago.

This is an excellant development from security point of view. I was defrauded personally some years ago while traveling, becuase the card information including the CVV was taken during a transaction. It is also good to see further trials as should be the case with any new technology. There are some accelerated durability tests under the scope of ISO/IEC 24789 which would be very applicable to this product.

whilst I see the security benefits isnt this re-introducing a new level of friction ( read annoying inconvenience ) to the consumers shopping experience ?  I thought we were wll trying to make things easier for consumer to spend their money on merchant purchases not harder ?
